Deep Core Operations

MBy MFerrari

You came to Fracta Mantis C to mine a shattered planet. The Space Rig hit a fragment on arrival, and what is left of your crew is sealed in a cargo hold with one terminal and the ship's external arms. Rebuild it from orbit, then send teams down to dig. Load the mule, haul it out, and come back for the next contract - seven regions, seventeen kinds of job, four classes to raise. Something is buried under the eighth.

Deep Core Operations

Description

Ko-fi

You came here to mine.

Fracta Mantis C is a shattered world, and Deep Core Operations surveyed it as one of the richest deposits within reach — ore worth crossing the system for, buried in the fragments of a planet that came apart a long time ago.

Your crew never got to start. On orbital insertion the Space Rig struck one of those fragments. Thrusters gone. Half the structure gone. The survivors are sealed in a cargo compartment with a single working terminal, and the wreck is still in orbit.

The terminal drives the ship's external arms. That is enough to pull material out of orbit, enough to rebuild one room, then another — power, storage, a control room, a drop bay. Not enough to leave. But enough to get people down there, which is what you came for.

Rock and Stone!

The loop

Repair the Rig with whatever the arms can reach. Take a contract. Drop a crew into the caves.

Down there you mine. Ore, rare minerals, liquids — whatever the region is hiding and whatever the contract asked for. Working beside you is the mule: a stubborn hauler that chews through deposits on its own, collects from the crates you leave behind, and carries the whole haul on its back.

Then you run. The extraction pod does not wait, and nothing counts unless the mule leaves with you — no ore, no pay, no progress. Everything still on the ground when the pod lifts stays on the ground.

Every cave is generated fresh: tunnels, chambers, nests, collapses, and whatever the region decided to put in your way.

Seven regions, and one that was not on the survey

Nauvis · Desert · Toxic · Gleba · Fulgora · Aquilo · Vulcanus

Each brings its own ores and liquids, and its own reasons you might not come back — enemies, worms, bosses, and air that needs a mask before it needs a weapon. Regions unlock as you push outward.

The eighth is not on any Deep Core chart.

Seventeen kinds of job

10 primary missions — mining, extermination, cave scanning, mule rescue, terminal hacking, liquid extraction, deep core drilling, tank escorts, fuel train delivery, power delivery runs.

7 secondary objectives stacked on top, from pest control to underground production quotas to freeing imprisoned miners.

Plus hacking puzzles with real deduction, boss encounters, deployable support equipment, and cave events that turn a routine haul into a retreat.

Four classes, and a career

Scout · Engineer · Miner · Heavy

Each class has its own stat curve, its own equipment slots, and its own list of weapons and gear nobody else may carry. Levels run to 20 — and once a class is capped, that player can sign an individual promotion contract, nine missions long, paid in rare minerals and run only with that class equipped. Finish it and the ceiling moves to 30, every equipment limit goes up, and the class earns the right to wear mech armor.

Promotions are per player, not per team. In multiplayer every crew member builds their own record.

Contracts

The team takes standing contracts from the Rig terminal: staged jobs across several regions with tolls to pay between stages, unlocking technologies, production lines and new territory. 40 achievements track the ones worth bragging about.

What the survey missed

Dig deep enough and you find out why the deposits are this rich, and why nothing has come back up to claim them. Something was built down there, and then sealed from the inside. Firepower will not open it.
