So now:
The sky changes with the hour, season, latitude, and longitude. For Vintage Story 1.22+.

Mark a year of sunrises (or sunsets) on a Sky Disc. Measure lights with a Sextant and write the readings into a book. Draw constellations through a telescope. Cut an astrolabe plate for your latitude and use your own records to plan another observation.

In Beta
So yes, some art is going to be bad. Some documentation will be rough. There will be bugs.
Most models, Images, recipes, and bits of UI are placeholders. UI/UX is constantly changing. Bug reports and screenshots belong on the issue tracker.

✓ Contributors Welcome

If you can make a better moon in five minutes, great! Please contribute it. That’s not sarcasm. Send me the art or a PR and I’ll look at it. A lot of this mod is placeholder. It has to be. I have limited time, so I choose where to spend it. Right now most of that goes into the astronomy, mechanics, measurements, and checking that what I’m putting in the sky actually behaves the way I think it does. And even then I screw up. So even filling issues and finding them helps -> issue tracker.

Tracking everything also takes time. Assets, licenses, tools, dependencies, attribution, changes, releases. I automate a lot of it because otherwise I’d spend my hobby time maintaining spreadsheets about my hobby. If we miss something, let us know. I’m sure we’ve missed things. If something needs attribution or correction, point it out and I’ll fix it. It may not be immediate.

Given the choice between documentation and working on the simulation, i will choose simulation first.

v0.9.0: Longitude Update

Longitude. World X now shifts the sun, daylight, and star field. Noon is local instead of happening everywhere at once.

Clock display. The server keeps universal time. The character panel and instruments can show local solar time, universal time, or whole-hour zones.

Sun and stars. The star field stays aligned with the visible sun on worlds with custom year lengths.

Moon art. Choose AstraTerra pixel art, photographic textures, or Vintage Story's original moon.

Server owners can set
longitudeAwareSun
to
false
in
ModConfig/astraterra.json
to keep Vintage Story's single time zone. Unfortunately longitude requires this to be a server mod.

Astra Extera is a companion mod that allows you get generate a new sky. I can also provide you a template to create your mod that uses Astra Terra to create your sky with your own procedure and assets.

The sky

Apparent magnitude controls each star's brightness and size. Fifty Stellarium deep-sky plates stay faint until a telescope resolves them. The Milky Way sits behind the catalog. There is still visual issues, see the issue tracker for all issue.

Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn move on Keplerian orbits. Nine meteor showers return during fixed parts of the world year. Four comets follow their own schedules and point their tails away from the sun. Halley's first pass and the next one is in world year 78. Plan accordingly.

Instruments

▾ Sky Disc

Form one from clay and fire it, or craft copper or bronze. At sunrise or sunset, sneak and hold right click under open sky to scratch the sun's place on the horizon. Keep marking until the band reaches an edge and turns back. The disc then gives year length, latitude, east or west, and the next solstice.

Right click reads it. Scroll turns it. Sneak-right-click the ground to set it down. Hold it up at night and left-drag between stars to engrave one connected constellation. Keep loose flint or a knife in the hotbar. A fired clay disc will not take a new figure.

<div class="spoiler" style="border: 1px solid #cfc9be; border-radius: 4px; margin: 20px 0
