Improved Quenching
Overhauls the quench and temper mechanics; bonuses based on skill and choice.
Description

Overview

Ever wished the tool bonuses were tied to player choices and smithing skill? Are you tired of the RNG grind for good stats? Improved Quenching overhauls the game's quenching and tempering mechanics to place more emphasis on player choices and skill during the smithing process! The choice of quench or temper method determines what kind of bonuses a tool/weapon will receive, and the quench temperature will determine how strong those bonuses are. Choose carefully though, as only one set of bonuses can be applied to an item!

Quenching:

There are two methods of quenching available: bare metal or covered in clay. Quenching the raw metal will boost the item's power, just like it does in vanilla. Covering an item with fireclay before quenching, however, will boost both power and durability, though neither stat will be as strong as a tool finished exclusively for power or durability. The temperature at the start of the quenching process determines how strong the bonus will be; quenching at higher temperatures yields better bonuses, but can also put the item at a greater risk of shattering. Overheating an item before quenching will shatter the item. Quenching only needs to be done once; attempting to quench multiple times will yield no additional benefits but will risk shattering the item.

Exact temperature brackets and associated bonuses, for those that wish them:

Spoiler!

1499-1697 F (815-925 C): yields +10% power (normal quench), or +5% power +4% durability (clay quench)

1967-1787 F (925-975 C): yields + 25% power (normal quench), or +13% power, +10% durability (clay quench)

1787-1922 F (975-1050 C): yields + 50% power (normal quench), or +25% power, +20% durability (clay quench)

Tempering:

Tempering is now the method used to improve an item's durability exclusively, with no boost to power. Simply heat the item to between 550-700 C and then let it cool off slowly. The bonus is a flat 40% increase to the item's durability--there is no variation here as there is for quenching.

Important Notes:

Items can be tempered or quenched, but not both. Choose your method carefully!

Known Issue: A tempered work item will not list the durability bonus in its tooltip, but the bonus will apply correctly to the crafted item and the bonus will be listed in the crafted item's tooltip.

Known Issue: Tempered work items still list their bonus as "Hardened" rather than "Tempered".

Known Issue: Shatter chance still listed as default vanilla value on tooltip, but will apply modified values at quenching

General Information:

This hasn't been tested in multiplayer yet, so I'm not sure how well it works on that front. For singleplayer, it should be safe to add or remove at any time, though I would recommend backing up your world(s) before changes like this just in case something goes wrong. Items should retain their stats after mod is removed.

Is this compatible with...?

Honestly, I have no idea. It works with the base game, and that is the main goal.

Known Incompatibilities:

Combat Overhaul Fork: This mod changes the quenching and tempering system and currently conflicts with Improved Quenching's system.

To-Do List:

Make better thumbnails

Create config file...eventually

Better page formatting

Acknowledgements and Licensing:

LadyWYT: Coding, testing, ideas, balancing, artwork, etc.

traugdor: MAJOR help with code wrangling, as well as proofreading/code verification and general idiot-proofing

Claude: AI gopher/librarian.
