Bear's Shifty Earth

Description

Now with first-class compatibility for Terrain Slabs!

Do you like the idea of soil instability, but find it to be too sensitive and random? Wish it was dependent on the environment so you had opportunities to strategically avoid it? Do you wish heavy rainfall did more than just ominously water your crops and instead made travel more dangerous?

Look no further! Bear's Shifty Earth gives you the power to tweak soil instability and adds a support score which, if met, prevents falling entirely. How much support is gained and needed is fully configurable by block type and can come from adjacent blocks and plant life, or be undermined by heavy rainfall. The default settings assumes you like the idea of collapses while digging but don’t want it to be a continuous, in-your-face issue except to make stormy weather more treacherous.

Shoutout to Sticky Dirt, a staple of my playthroughs and an obvious inspiration for Shifty Earth.

Currently, this mod has options for four types of “earth”: Soil, Peat, Clay, Farmland.

In general, soil is relatively stable and needs the equivalent of 3 solid faces around it to be fully stable (grass and plants can reduce this, as shown in the screenshot). Clay is very stable, unless it is raining in which case it becomes very unstable. Peat is always rather unstable and is impossible to support in heavy rain. Farmland is easy to support but falls readily if not.

This is only my second mod so please let me know if anything is… shifty.

Make sure to select "sand, gravel and soil with sideways instability" in your world configuration; this mod does not work properly without it.

Features

Support. Support is given by solid-sided blocks below, above, and adjacent to the earth block. Grass coverage and plant blocks give additional support. A block with sufficient support will not fall when disturbed.

Storm instability. Intense rain can severely penalize support. Dark, heavy storms can make otherwise well-supported soil collapse when stepped on, making cliffs and ridges treacherous in a storm or even cause shallow dirt ceilings to collapse into a cave beneath. Only affects earth exposed to rain.

Per-Category Toggle. You can disable falling entirely, revert to vanilla logic, or use Shifty Earth on a type-by-type basis, with all four categories (Soil, Clay, Farmland, and Peat) having individually configurable support stats. Clay, for instance, is much more stable than soil unless it's raining heavily, in which case it is prone to mudslides like in real life and is more likely to slide than soil.

Configure fall chance. If unsupported, vanilla falling logic kicks in, but the chance to actually fall is configurable. Turn it up to emphasize support, turn it down to make landslides rarer.

Configuration File Options

Each option containing the word “Soil” has a “Clay”, “Peat”, and “Farm” version, only soil is included here for brevity.

SoilBehavior :
A flag indicating whether this earth type should be shifty, follow vanilla logic, or have falling disabled.

SoilSupportRequired :
How many points of support does this earth type need to be considered fully stable.

SoilAdjacentSupport :
How many points of support is gained for each solid block face adjacent (The four cardinal sides).

SoilBelowSupport :
How much support is gained from having a solid block face directly beneath.

SoilAboveSupport :
How much support is give by having a solid block face against the top of the earth block.

GrassCoverBonus :
How much support is gained from full grass coverage.
