Compost Bin
Compost bin (modded barrel with 8 slots), accepts perishables and dry plant matter.

Description

Yes! It is, indeed, another compost mod! My wife and I were trying to find a mod to make composting better, and did not really like any of the offerings we were seeing, so I strongarmed claude code into helping me make this. Please accept my offering of a modded barrel which works as a compost bin. The bin has 8 slots, accepts perishable items, as well as rot, dry grass, cattail tops, thatch and papyrus. Perishable items placed in the bin will spoil at an accelerated rate, dry plant matter gains the capabilitiy of spoiling as well. Decomposition time is based on a combination of ambient temperature and simulated microbial activity. If the bin contains at least 64 rot, and nothing but rot, you can seal the bin and the vanilla compost reaction occurs. To build the bin, place the normal items for the barrel recipe, with 2 dry grass in the empty side slots:

SBS

GBG

SBS

v1.3.14 changelog:

- Added peat bricks as a compost booster: up to 25% more decomposition and biological heating, plus improved aeration
retention after turning. Excess peat increases overheating risk.

- Extended peat lifespan: default duration increased from 6 to 18 effective game hours.
- Improved heating and moisture retention: reduced heat loss and evaporation, tuning healthy, balanced bins toward the
50–65°C maximum-efficiency range.

- Fixed insertion-related temperature drops: adding items no longer pulls the pile toward vanilla’s 0°C item-
temperature baseline.

- Added temperature-transfer memory: removed ingredients retain their compost temperature for one configurable game
hour, with consistent handling of splits, swaps, drops, and merges.

- Improved heat conservation during stack merging: temperature mixing now accounts for moisture and heat capacity.
- Browns now require greens to decompose: progress pauses when greens run out and resumes when more are added. Added a
paused-browns status message.

- Made shovel turning gentler: each turn now removes 5% instead of 15% of the temperature difference above ambient,
with the same aeration benefit.

- Hardened multiplayer inventory access: improved reach, dimension, land-claim, session, and packet validation.
- Added automatic configuration upgrades: old defaults migrate to the new settings while preserving other customized
values.

- Expanded documentation and regression coverage: including heating, peat consumption, inventory transfers,
configuration migration, and multiplayer access.

v1.3.7 changelog:

- Configuration added: Introduced ModConfig/compostbin.json with configurable sealed composting duration.
Server settings synchronize to clients and apply to existing sealed batches. Invalid values fall back to defaults.

- Expanded configuration: Added controls for rot requirements, compost yield, decomposition, mixture balance,
heating, cooling, neighboring heat exchange, evaporation, aeration, ignition, turning, and watering. UI readings
follow server settings. Added a settings guide and example configuration.

- Smoldering alternative: Disabling self-ignition now causes internal smoldering instead of spreading fire.
It gradually consumes greens and browns, produces smoke and warnings, and preserves existing rot and compost. Added
configurable consumption speed, bringing the total to 29 settings.

- Security and reliability fixes: Server interactions recheck land-claim permissions; inventory drops occur
only server-side; Harmony patches have safer lifecycle handling; compost conversion validates its output before
consuming rot; invalid saved numbers and moisture values fall back safely.

- Internal cleanup: Reorganized source by responsibility, separated types, and extracted physics coordination
and material registration from the mod entry point. No intended gameplay or configuration-default changes.

- Spoilage fix: Unsealed bins below 75°C maintain at least normal spoilage before configured multipliers,
preventing cold or inactive compost from preserving food at default settings. Biological heating still depends on
actual activity.

- Saved-world edit crash fixed: Synchronized settings now use serialization-safe encoding. Affected saves are
repaired by loading the world normally, then saving and exiting before reopening its edit screen.

v1.3.0

------

- Replaced temperature targets and fire countdowns with a simplified simulation of heat production, cooling, moisture,
and aeration.

- Added heat exchange between barrels sharing a face. Larger clusters retain more heat and
can become fire hazards.

- Added heat loss through all six faces.
- Decomposition speed now responds to pile temperature, moisture, aeration, and the green/brown mixture.
- Turning replenishes aeration and releases heat instead of granting a timed speed boost.
- Watering adds moisture and cools the contents; hot barrels also respond to the game’s rain and immersion cooling.
- Browns now use the game’s spoilage system. Their progress survives removal, pauses outside the bin, and combines
when stacks merge.

- Both greens and browns retain item temperature when removed and cool thro
