Joy of Sailing
Gives actual sailing mechanics to the vanilla sailboat, provides a JSON library for sailboat packs

<span style="color: #e74c3c;">Joy of Sailing is compatible with Simple Wind Direction, and is much better with it! Alternatively, you could use Pelagus: Simple Wind Direction, which is pretty much the same mod but configurable, or Pelagus Wind which apparently is also server-synced (untested by me)</span>
Joy of Sailing, now in 1.20!
Changes the vanilla sailboat to have actual sailing mechanics.
How to sail
Here are the sailboat's controls: (it's mapped to your character controls)
Left/Right : turn left or right
Forward/Backward : raise or lower the sail
Sprint (ctrl)/Jump (space) : rotate the sail left or right
If you want to go as fast as possible, you'll have to adjust the sail so the wind blows directly into it, as close as possible to a 90° angle (this means that the flag on top of the mast should point into the sail).
The difference in sailing mechanics is due to vanilla implementing a square sail, instead of the triangle sail Joy of Sailing used previously. Triangle sails will return in sailboat packs in the future.
You can gain some forward speed by changing directions regularly (going left, right, left, right...), mimicking sculling.
Holding left and right at the same time for over 1 second will start auto-sculling, where the sailboat will scull without you touching the keyboard. You can disable it by pushing either the left or right key afterwards.
Configuration
Configs in 1.4.0-rc.3 and up are handled via the /worldconfig command, instead of config files. This ensures that they're automatically properly synced between client and server, and allows you to have different configs on different worlds.
To create a config entry, you'll need to type the command: "/worldconfigcreate float <config name> <value>", replacing <config name> with the name of the config (see below) and <value> with the value you wish to set. Already created configs can be set using "/worldconfig <config name> <value>".
Here are the available config options:
joyofsailing.minwindspeed : adjusts a global minimum wind speed. All wind speeds below that value will be considered as having that value (range: ~0.0 - 1.2)
joyofsailing.sailspeedmul : multiplies the sailing speed of all sailboats by a value. 1 by default
joyofsailing.scullspeedmul : multiplies the sculling speed (speed when rowing by going left, right, left, right) of all sailboats by a value. 1 by default
There's not nearly as much to it as in 1.3, since many mechanics are already handled by vanilla now.
There are no ropes linking the sail to the tacks (yet).
Compatibility with Rivers is untested, might work out-of-the-box.

Joy of Sailing is also compatible, since 1.3.0, with the Rivers mod.

<span style="color: #e74c3c;">Now compatible with the Banners mod! Sail the seven seas whilst hoisting the Black Flag!</span>
<span style="color: #000000;">Joy of Sailing adds sailing to the game.</span>
<span style="color: #000000;">Here are the sailboat's controls: (it's mapped to your character controls)</span>
<span style="color: #000000;">Left/Right : turn left or right (you need a crude oar in hand if you're controlling a Sail raft)</span>
<span style="color: #000000;">Forward/Backward : Trimming the sail (change how far the sail can go from the boat's center) or, if the sail is fully folded, row like in the raft</span>
<span style="color: #000000;">Sprint (CTRL by default)/Jump (SPACE by default): Raise or lower the sail</span>
<span style="color: #000000;">If you want to go as fast as possible, you'll have to adjust the angle of the sail according to the wind. If you don't know which way the wind is facing, there's a tiny red flag on top of the sailboat's mast: it always points in the wind direction.</span>
<span style="color: #000000;">A proper sailing crash course is planned. For now, try to think that directly downwind requires a fully opened sail, sidewind is ~45°, upwind is fully trimmed, and between these it's pretty much linear.</span>
[NEW! 1.2.0] There are three variants of sailboat:
- The sail raft, a single-seat, slow option for early-game sailing.
- The sailboat, a fast two-seater requiring at least copper and linen to make. It has an inventory of 12 slots.
- The cargo sailboat, a slow single-seater that can carry a trunk (36 slots) worth of items.
To pick up a sailboat, hold CTRL and right-click the boat.
