Navi
A glowing fairy who lives in your pendant: light source, enemy alert, nameable and recolorable.

Description

Navi

A glowing fairy companion for Vintage Story, inspired by Ocarina of Time. She floats above your head, gives off real light, chimes when enemies are near, and remembers everything you teach her about herself — her name, her color, where she came from.

Carrying her

Two ways to keep her with you, crafted from clearquartz and either glass or gold:

Bottle (clearquartz on top, glass pane below) — edited. Capture a wild navi, then release her using the bottle.

Pendant (gold ingot on top, clearquartz below) — active carry. Hold right-click on the ground for 3.5 seconds to release her, hold right-click on her for 3.5 seconds to recall her into the pendant.

Interacting with her

Plain right-click chimes her bell. Hold sneak (Ctrl) + right-click on your Navi while the pendant is in hand to open the Edit Navi dialog:

Type her a name — renders above her head like a player

Only her owner can edit her. Everyone else just gets a chime.

Combat warning

When a hostile creature enters her 16-block line of sight, her glow turns red and she chimes once. She mutes for 10 seconds after warning so she doesn't drill your ear during long fights. Her glow returns to your chosen color when the threat passes.

She also has flat damage reduction and slow self-regeneration so she survives close calls.

Wild encounters

Wild Navis spawn rarely in heavy, damp, low-elevation forests — about half as common as a vanilla fox. They drift within 100 blocks of where they spawned and have no owner, so any player can chime them.

To tame a wild Navi, right-click her with a clearquartz in hand — she folds into a bottled creature item that you can equip.

Behavior notes

She trails behind your head when you move, orbits visibly when you sneak, and drops a block lower when you're sitting on a stool or the ground

She emits real
lightHsv
light — everything she flies past lights up at the color you picked

Multiple players can each own their own Navi without interfering; only one owned Navi per player at a time

Customizing her sound

The bundled
flutter.ogg
in
assets/navi/sounds/creature/navi/
is her single voice clip — played as her idle chime, her right-click chime, and her enemy-alert chime. Drop your own
.ogg
file at the same path to replace it. Pitch is set in the entity JSON — one place, applies everywhere.

Author: Ranadriel. The customizations only lived on the live entity, so killing it destroyed them.

The pendant and bottle now carry the saved color and name with them. Any carrier in your hotbar, character slots, backpack, or gear gets updated when you change her color/name through the edit dialog, and the next respawn restores from whichever carrier holds the saved state (pendant preferred over bottle).

If you already have a Navi in the wild, open the edit dialog and re-pick her color and name once after updating — that writes the saved state to your carrier so future respawns will keep it.

1.0.3

- Releasing Navi no longer destroys her bottle — you keep an empty clearquartz
bottle in your inventory.
- New item: Empty Navi Bottle. Crafted indirectly: any time you release Navi
from a full creature-navi bottle, the empty one is left behind.
- Sneak + right-click on your Navi while holding an empty bottle to call her
back inside. Her name and glow are preserved on the resulting full bottle, so
re-releasing brings the same Navi back.
- Bottle swap also fires in Creative mode so the behavior is visible while
testing.
- Thanks to Codyman765 for the report.

1.0.4 — Softer combat glow

Alert light is now a warm sunset red-orange instead of an aggressive pure red.
The base warm glow reads through; the red sits on top as a tint.
