Wood Lathe

Description

Hey all, I've just returned from the arctic so I will try to get this updated soon. Thanks!

Please let me know in discord or in the comments if you have any issues, content requests, or suggestions. Other modders, please feel free to reach out for compatibility or help adding your items to be crafted on the lathe. This is a base tool, and the items to be crafted in Vanilla are limited, so I'm hoping other mods can make use of it. In the meantime, I can only test this so much by myself. Please throw it on your server or singleplayer world and let me know if there are any issues. I'm quite busy but I'll do my best to fix things in a timely manner.

You may need to redo your config file when the mod updates. It shouldn't break anything that I know of to have them on, but you may wish to double check that on the first load-in.

This mod adds a woodturning lathe, a mechanically powered machine used with a special chisel to turn wood into cylindrical items.

Its strongest use is as a replacement for getting sticks, as the tool handles you can make add durability based on the wood type and are textured to match the wood you use. Purpleheart handled golden axes, for example! Softwoods will take a small penalty to durability but are still more durable than using sticks. I have also included wooden bowls, wooden flowerpots, arrow shafts, and candlesticks, all wood-typed. I have not included all tools yet, but so far the axe, falx/swords, pickaxe, scythe, shovel, and spear.

The seraph has a custom animation when turning on the lathe, sounds, and particle effects.

Turning/cutting speed is relative to the turning speed of the lathe.

The lathe will not let you cut convex holes in the sides of a workpiece, or cut it in half, unrealistically. You must knock the corners or ends off first and then take the rest down. You can gouge the end of the workpiece to make bowls, flowerpots, and candlesticks however.

The tool handles and arrow shafts can be stacked on the ground like firewood. I will likely add the lathe blanks to this in the near future.

If you do not wish to include the buffed and woodtyped tools, you can use ConfigLib to disable them, and you will only have vanilla tools available.

Future Plans

Better implementing the multiblock to allow larger work items. Right now, the interactions with the work item are unable to be ported from one block to another so I have limited the size of the lathe and the work items.

Half a block is empty space behind the lathe. It looks silly if I make it a full two blocks, but can't use the second block at all for the work item. I may just put some visual stuff here to make this area look better, or try to add some functionality to it once I get to grips with the multiblock classes (I would love to put a tool rack here).

Remaking models for all the refined tools, so they are a little more than just a stat buff. Unfortunately, VSMC and I don't agree that much, so this will probably happen when I get around to learning blockbench.

Implementation with other mods, if possible. JonR has inquired about Toolsmith compatibility, an absolutely excellent mod, so I would love to see that.

Changing the variant system to a more streamlined, efficient system.

Known Issues

On the extended/multiblock portion of the lathe, with a work item in it, you can hover and see voxel outlines where they shouldn't be.

The collision box extends past the end of the lathe. This is because the default multiblock behavior copies the collision box of the controller and I haven't gotten around that yet. If I make it a half block, it does it to both. Will fill with clutter or functionality eventually.

Can't craft the woodtyped tools?

Double-check using ConfigLib that "Enable Tools" is true. You should be able to view this in-game via the mod settings menu, but if not, the lathemod.yaml file in your "ModConfig" folder will have it listed as well.
