Crucible on Forge
Smelt ore at your forge instead of trekking back to a firepit.

Description

Crucible on Forge

Smelt ore at the forge you are already standing at. Seat a fired crucible on the coals, right-click to open its four ore slots, load them, and work the bellows — the ore melts right there beside the anvil, and the metal comes out hot enough to carry straight to a mold.

How it works. The crucible sits in the forge's work slot like any other work item, so it rests on the coals and heats with the fire. A plain right-click opens a firepit-style dialog: crucible on the left, four ore slots beside it. Melting uses the firepit's exact formula at three times the rate — but only while the forge is hot enough, and a forge only reaches smelting heat with the bellows going. Bellows are mandatory by design: a firepit smelts unattended, while the forge demands your attention and pays it back in speed. If the heat dips, progress hardens back slowly instead of resetting, and a half-finished melt survives a refiring.

The forge tells you what is happening:

Temperature and melt progress are always shown together on the forge's info text.

Ores that form an alloy show each one's share of the melt, and a mix that won't combine names the ratios the alloy needs ("Tin bronze needs copper 88-92%, tin 8-12%").

A charge the loaded fuel can never melt says so outright ("Needs 1325°C — this fuel reaches only 1232°C") before you waste the fuel finding out.

Fuel matters. Coke is the only fuel that reaches the top of the range, and therefore the only one that melts nickel. Charcoal and the coals handle copper and the bronzes. Lignite never reaches smelting heat at all.

Every forge also gains a damper. Look at one, press F, and pick a temperature: the forge holds the work item there instead of driving it to whatever the fuel can reach, and metal already hotter cools back down to it. Presets sit in the middle of the two bands vanilla otherwise makes you time by eye — tempering at 625°C and quenching at 930°C — so those steps become a number you set rather than a moment you catch. It is a ceiling, not a heater, and each forge remembers its own setting. Smelting ignores the damper; the melt has its own ceiling.

Fits into your world and removes cleanly. Works on forges already placed in your save — the vanilla forge and, if installed, QPTech's chiseltools decorative forge (no dependency; the mod runs identically without it). No new blocks, items, or recipes. Remove the mod and every forge reverts to vanilla with its contents intact. Server owners can tune the heat rate, melt rate, cooling, temperature ceiling and damper in
ModConfig/crucibleonforge.json
, and other mods' forges can be added by config without recompiling. Compatible with SmithingPlus.

Now with ConfigLib Support. Every tuning value now hasan in-game settings window (pause menu → Mods → Crucible on Forge): the common knobs — heating and melting speed, bellows retention, the temperature ceiling and the damper toggle — sit at the top, with the fine-tuning and damper-limit settings in collapsible sections below.

Created with AI assistance.

Copyright (c) 2026 High Tech Games.
