Heat Retention (Continued)
Insulate Chiseled Blocks with Oakum and keep your buildings warm.

Description

What this mod does

Apply oakum to a chiseled block to seal its seams. Insulated chiseled blocks retain heat better, so interior rooms hold their warmth through cold biomes and harsh winters.

Built a beautiful chiseled window, but the game still treats your house as outdoors? Decorative walls a full half-block thick that the weather walks straight through? Plug the draft cracks with oakum. An insulated chiseled block counts as a proper wall for the game's interior-detection check, so your enclosed space finally registers as inside.

Oakum is crafted from flax fibers. The more fibers fed into a single stack, the higher the durability of the resulting oakum, with a full stack of 64 producing a full-durability oakum. Partial oakums can be repaired by adding more fibers, or combined two-at-a-time to consolidate inventory.

Migrating from the original Heat Retention

This continuation uses a renamed modid (heatretentioncontinued) so it can sit alongside the original on installs without collision. A bundled remap file automatically renames oakum items in saved inventories on first load, and the block-entity behavior recognizes the legacy attribute key so chiseled blocks insulated under the original mod stay insulated after the swap.

Uninstall or Disable the original heatretention mod before installing this continuation to avoid duplicate items in saved inventories.

Configuration

No setup required. The mod ships with working defaults: 64 durability per full oakum, 1 durability consumed per insulated block. Server admins who want different values can edit heatretention.json in the world's ModConfig folder, which is created automatically on first load.

Compatibility

Vintage Story 1.22.0 or newer.

Universal (both client and server install required for multiplayer).

Compatible with mods that do not replace the chiseled-block class.

Changelog

Spoiler!

v1.0.3 (continuation initial release)

Ported to Vintage Story 1.22 and .NET 10.

Modid renamed to heatretentioncontinued so the continuation can coexist with the original on installs. A bundled remap migrates oakum items and the insulation attribute key on first load.

Craft and repair recipes require the fiber ingredient to be in a single slot. Any arrangement that spreads fibers across two or more slots fails to match, so the recipe is unambiguous about which stack determines the resulting durability.

New oakum combine recipe. Stack two oakums vertically in the crafting grid to produce one whose durability is the sum of both inputs, capped at the configured max.

About this fork

The original Heat Retention by Svarozhich was released under the MIT license and has not been updated since Vintage Story 1.19. This continuation updates only the build, packaging, and 1.22 API compatibility so the mod runs on current Vintage Story. All textures, item shapes, recipes, lang strings, and the original block-behavior design are Svarozhich's work.
